BC Chicken Growers' Association

The BC Chicken Growers’ Association (BCCGA) was founded in 1957 as a non-profit organization to unite commercial chicken growers in BC and to work towards a more stable industry. The Association represents registered broiler chicken growers in BC and acts as a liaison between the chicken growers, other branches of the chicken industry and the government. The BCCGA has 9 directors with representation from the three main production regions of broiler chicken in BC: Lower Mainland, the Interior and Vancouver Island.

The BCCGA has portfolios for Biosecurity, Environment, Husbandry, Disease, and the Poultry in Motion Educational Mini Barn program. Directors also serve on external industry organizations such as the BC Chicken Marketing Board’s Pricing and Production Advisory Committee and Specialty Markets Advisory Committee, Chicken Value Chain Committee, BC Poultry Association and the BC Sustainable Poultry Group.

In 2018, there were 316 commercial chicken growers in BC, producing 253,484,406 kg live weight of chicken, an increase of 8.7% over 2017. The production can be broken down as follows: 94.5% mainstream broilers, 2.68% organic broilers, 2.4% Taiwanese Chickens and 0.5% Silky Chickens.

From 2006 to 2018, the BC Chicken Marketing Board (BCCMB) has distributed 1,007,667 kg LIVE weight of quota to over 64 new entrant growers.

As of January 1, 2019, there was 120,842 kg of quota available for distribution to new entrants. The BCCMB is committed to its New Entrant Grower Program that continues to address regional needs and specialty markets for chicken production and processing.

Chicken is not only Canada’s favourite meat, but also British Columbia’s. According to Nielsen Market Track Data fresh chicken has 41.2% of the market share of all meat sold at retail in British Columbia – the highest market share in Canada.

BC Chicken growers are proud to supply BC consumers with fresh local chicken and a choice in how their chicken is raised.
