BC Hatching Eggs

You don’t get the chicken without the hatching egg!

The hatching egg sector is at the beginning of the supply chain for the chicken industry.

There are 57 registered hatching egg producers in BC, committed to continuing the family farming legacy.  All farms are family-owned, operated with pride and adhere to strict Food Safety and Biosecurity protocols.   This results in healthy birds producing quality hatching eggs that ensure quality meat to the consumer.

The hatching egg sector supports the chicken sector in BCV.

In 2022, British Columbia produced over 10,428,000 dozen hatching eggs valued at $73.9 million.

That contributed to the 190 million kilograms of eviscerated chicken produced for consumption in our province.

British Columbia is the third largest hatching egg-producing province, supplying approximately 15% of the Canadian market share.

BC Turkey

The BC Turkey Association (BCTA) was formed in 1951 under the Societies Act and was mainly a social venue for turkey farmers in BC. The BCTA believes in giving back by organizing an annual charity golf tournament with BC Egg. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Union Gospel Mission.

The BCTA represents 59 registered turkey growers in British Columbia. In 2022, BCturkey farmers grew a total of 21,963,864 kg of turkey meat, with farm gate sales of $47 million. Production is concentrated in the Fraser Valley but also occurs on Vancouver Island, in the Interior, and in the Peace Region.

There are two mandatory on-farm programs in British Columbia that ensure a high standard of care for the turkeys we raise: On-Farm Food Safety Program© and the Flock Care Program©. The BCTA works closely with the BC Turkey Marketing Board and all industry partners to promote safe, quality and nutritious turkey products in our province.

BC Chicken Growers

The BC Chicken Growers’ Association (BCCGA) was founded in 1957 as a non-profit organization to unite commercial chicken growers in BC and to work towards a more stable industry. The Association represents registered broiler chicken growers in BC and acts as a liaison between the chicken growers, other branches of the chicken industry and the government. The BCCGA has 7 directors with representation from the three main production regions of broiler chicken in BC: Lower Mainland, the Interior and Vancouver Island.

The BCCGA has portfolios for Biosecurity, Environment, Husbandry, Disease and the Poultry in Motion Educational Mini Barn program. Directors also serve on external industry organizations such as the BC Chicken Marketing Board’s Pricing and Production Advisory Committee and Specialty Markets Advisory Committee, Chicken Value Chain Committee, BC Poultry Association and the BC Sustainable Poultry Farming Group.

In 2022, 314 chicken growers produced 258.6 million kg (live weight) of chicken, an increase of 1.32% from 2021.  Farm Gate sales in 2022 were an estimated 588 million dollars.

In the last 40 years, the carbon footprint of the Canadian chicken sector was reduced by 37% and water consumption was reduced by 45%.

BC chicken growers are proud to supply BC consumers with fresh, local, and sustainably produced chicken.
